Abstract: In 1670 Isaac Newton gave an algorithm to compute, term by term, the
series arising as local parametrization of plane algebraic curves f(x,y) = 0.
The main tool used in the algorithm is a polygon called "The Newton Polygon".
We will recall Newtons method and give an extension to any dimension
and codimension. To deal with several variables, the field of Puiseux
series in one variable is replaced by the field of w-positive Puiseux
series. The Newton polyhedron of a polynomial is replaced by its
normal fan. The tropical variety comes in naturally as the intersection
of normal fans.
