We will start with giving a functorial definition of rational conformal
field theory on pointed stable curves, and discuss a particular instance of
it that is associated to a simple affine Lie algebra following
Tsuchiya-Ueno-Yamada.  In the second part we will relate the spaces that are
obtained under the above assignment (called conformal blocks) to theta
functions in algebraic geometry (following Beauville, Faltings,..).
