First announcement
PRAGMATIC is a project, sponsored by INDAM, for stimulating research
in Algebraic Geometry among young people, especially those living in
isolated centres or peripheral universities all over Europe. For this
purpose, every year, a group of experts will suggest problems in some
specific field and will give lectures and seminars and will have
individual discussions with the participants in order to try to attack
and to solve these problems. At the end of all the activities of
Pragmatic the results that the participants obtain could be reproduced
in a special issue of the journal Le Matematiche.
In the period June 20th - July 9th, 2011, at Dipartimento di
Matematica e Informatica of the University of Catania, a new edition
of this school of research Pragmatic 2011 will be held. Teachers:
Prof. Ralf Froberg (Stockholm University) Prof. Mats Boij (Sveriges
Storsta Tekniska Universitet) Collaborators: Dott. Eric Emtander
(Stockholm University) Dott. Veronica Crispin Quinonez (Stockholm
University)
Theme of research: Graded algebras and modules --- properties and invariants
People who wish to be considered either for participation and/or for
financial support should fill out the application form (in latex)
below, which should be sent to the following address:
E-mail:zappalag at dmi.unict.it or E-mail:ragusa at dmi.unict.it
The deadline for applications is March 31th 2011.

{\bf Theme of research}: {\it Graded algebras and modules ---
properties and invariants.}
\vskip.5cm
{\bf Scientific activity.} We will study graded algebras and modules
arising in various possible applications, such as semigroups,
simplicial complexes and low-dimensional varieties. In particular, we
will look at invariants, such as Hilbert functions and graded Betti
numbers and their relations to properties of the algebras and modules
as well as at classification problems, including the study of these
invariants up to scaling. In the study we will also make use of the
computational tools available through computer algebra systems as
\emph{Macaulay2} and \emph{CoCoA}. \bigskip {\bf Pragmatic} will
accept about $15-20$ young participants and will support all the
participants which are not able to find support in their institutions.
\medskip This financial support will be awarded, essentially, to young
researchers, say at the pre-postdoctoral level, with preference given
to those belonging to geographically isolated locations.\par
The support will cover the lodging and boarding along all period of
Pragmatic \ann, the cost of the fee and some travel expenses.\par
The Co-ordinator of {\bf Pragmatic} is Prof. Alfio Ragusa (University
of Catania). Other local organizers are: \par
Giuseppe Zappal\`a, Rosario Strano, Renato Maggioni, Salvatore Giuffrida. \par
People who wish to be considered either for participation and/or for
financial support should fill out the enclosed {\bf application form},

The Committee of Pragmatic will decide about financial supports and
admissions within {\bf April 10th, \ann} and will inform all the
applicants of the outcome. \par Moreover a list of participants and
all the activities of the school will be spread by {\bf EAGER}
