Dear All,
The third of the Istanbul Number Theory meetings will be held on July 18th,
Wednesday. We feel very lucky to have yet another distinguished speaker for
this meeting, Prof. Gopal Prasad, visiting from Michigan and IAS-Princeton.
His talk should be of interest to more geometrically oriented audience too,
so the colleagues on the more geometric side of arithmetic may care to join
us as well.
The title and the abstract is attached below. The talk will take place at
the Sabanci University Communication Center in Karakoy this once (we
cordially thank Sabanci University for hosting us there -- also IMBM and
Galatasaray University for hosting us for the first two meetings). You may
find all the relevant information below.
Looking forward to meeting many of you next week.
Best regards,
Kazim

Title: Fake projective spaces and cohomolgy of arithmetic groups
Abstract: A fake projective space of dimension n is a smooth complex
projective variety whose cohomolgy groups with complex coefficients are
same as those of the complex projective space of dimension n. If n=2, these
varieties are called "fake projective planes", first of which was
constructed by David Mumford in 1979 using p-adic uniformization. In
collaboration with Sai Kee Yeung, I have determined them all. In higher
dimension, we have looked at those ones which are uniformized by the
complex n-ball and whose fundamental group is an arithmetic subgroup of
PU(n,1). We have shown that fake projective spaces arising this way can
have complex dimension at most 4. We have found examples of such spaces in
dimension 4. These are all connected Shimura varieties.
