Probability theory plays an increasingly important role in many branches of
contemporary theoretical physics. An equally valid statement in the reverse
direction can claim that theoretical physics provides highly challenging
problems to probabilists. It is well known that probability theory is
ubiquitous in those domains of physics which deal with systems with an
infinite number of degrees of freedom.

The summer school’s main aim is to provide its participants a detailed
presentation of some of the research directions in the analysis of such
systems. Four sets of lectures, varying between twelve and fifteen hours
each, will hopefully arouse the curiosity of some of the participants,
encourage them to pursue some research problems closely related to the
topics presented in the summer school. The general level of the lectures
should enable advanced undergraduate or graduate students, as well as
post-docs, to fully benefit from participation.

The summer school has been designated by the Bernoulli Society, which will
hold its 8th World Conference in Probability and Statistics in Istanbul
next year (for more information, the web page can be reached at
http://www.worldcong2012.org/), as a co-sponsored satellite meeting.
