Beethoven symphony?
Can people find mathematical equations beautiful? And are you only able to have an emotional reaction to a formula if you understand what it means?
Semir Zeki at University College London set out to answer both of these questions in a research study. He asked 16 mathematicians to rate 60 equations on a scale ranging from ugly to beautiful while scanning their brain. His team found that the more beautiful a mathematician found an equation, the more activity their brain showed in the orbitofrontal cortex - an area associated with emotional reactions to visual and musical works of art.
Semir then carried out the same test on non-mathematicians. One participant had no response to the equations, but some of the people saw beauty in the formulas despite not understanding their meaning.
It's a fascinating study on how neural mechanisms can allow us to experience beauty. You can read more on the research on Scientific American <http://webmail.psu.edu.sa/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/equations-are-art-inside-a-mathematicians-brain/> .

Potential Methods and Seismic Tomography in Geoexploration
The aim of potential methods and seismic tomography is to extract specific
information about the composition and the disturbances of the bedrock from
available data. Of particular interest in geoexploration are seismograms,
which arise from the scattering of seismic waves on boundary layers or
from the conversion of certain wave types. An essential goal is to
transfer the signal, which results from integration of the wave equation
under the expectation, the designated properties of the rock like the
velocity field can be interpreted from the transformed signal in a better
way.
In this talk, based on the regularization of Green's function (fundamental
solutions), new wavelet techniques for a detailed band-pass filtering of
(acoustic as well as elastic) seismic phenomena are formulated to get a
local understanding and interoperability of scattered wavefield
potentials.
