1968 ağustounda 24 ay süren askerlik görevimi bitirdikten sonra 1968/1969 akademik yılı için ODTÜ matematik bölümüne master yapmak üzere kabul edildim. Ege Üniversitesinde lisans öğrencisi iken Ikeda ile başlattığımız çalışmaları sürdürmeyi düşünüyordum. Ikeda iki yıllığına Hamburg gitmişti. Yaptığım asistanlik başvurusunu degerlendirmek Arf'a kalmisti. 
Arf Topoloji bilmiyordu ama bana ODTÜ lu olmanın nasıl bir ayrıcalık olduğunu çok iyi anlattı. 
Ben de esyalarimi toplayıp evime döndüm. 

Sayın Akyildiz işte kriptonun altındaki yalın gerçek bu.

ODTÜ lu olmanın nasıl bir ayrıcalık olduğunu 1968'de ODTÜ de matematik bölümüne asistan olmak için Cahit Arf'in muhatabı olanlar çok iyi bilirler.

21 Nisan 2015 tarihinde ODTÜ'de Cahit Arf Seminerine konuşmacı olarak gelmişti. Konuşmasının abstract ı: 
Today's mathematics is using foundations which have been developed in the late 19th - early 20th century. Since these foundations had been completed mathematics has grown from a field advanced by a few outstanding minds to a large enterprise involving tens of thousands of mathematicians. On this new scale of existence, it is becoming impossible for mathematics to rely entirely on the old peer-review model of ensuring the correctness of the results. Univalent Foundations are new foundations of mathematics invented with the intention of being usable for the development of computer proof assistants that will facilitate the crafting and verification of complex mathematical constructions. ​
