"Distance of the set of commutators to the identity" 

Özet: According to a classical theorem of Wintner and Wielandt, the equation [A,B]=I does not have any solution A and B in the algebra of linear bounded operators B(H) on a Hilbert space H, where [A,B]=AB-BA denotes the commutator of A and B, and I denotes the identity operator on H. We present a survey of known results for the estimation of the distance from the set of commutators to the identity and some open questions. Senior and graduate students are welcome.
