Our guest Dr. Maciej Borodzik from Mathematical Institute of Polish Academy of Sciences will give a mini lecture series on geometric topology next week. 

First Lecture: November 15th, 13:30 Math department seminar room (122) 
Title: Knot concordance and Z-homology cobordisms. 
Abstract: It is known that high dimensional simply-connected manifolds that are 
Z-homology cobordant are diffeomorphic. In dimension 3 this does not 
hold. We discuss the notion of knot concordance and show relation of 
this notion to Z-homology cobordism of 3-manifolds. 



Second Lecture: November 17th, 14:30 Math department seminar room (122) 
Title: Introduction to knot Floer homology. 
Abstract: We begin with giving examples of knot Floer homology and of invariants 
that can be deduced from it. We introduce the notion of a d-invariant 
of a 3-manifold which is the result of a surgery of a knot. 
We define Heegaard Floer homology for 3-manifolds. We give a 
construction for manifolds with b_1=0. We give some applications and 
relate to knot Floer theory.
