Prof. Stephen Watson [1] from York University (Canada) will be 
delivering a talk, the details of which are provided below.

Title: A Description of Semiorders, and Consequences

Abstract: In 1914, Norbert Weiner introduced the concept of a semiorder. 
In 1956, Duncan Luce brought semiorders to economics to study 
preferences when indifference is not transitive. In the next 70 years, 
semiorders have become a key concept for modeling economic choices and 
decisions when risks or errors are present. In 1958, Dana Scott and 
Patrick Suppes gave sufficient conditions for a semiorder to be 
described by means of a threshold of perception. In the decades that 
followed, others gave various necessary conditions. In 2016, A. 
Giarlotta and I gave a description of all semiorders using a kind of 
shifted lexicographic ordering that extends the notion of a threshold of 
perception. In 2025, A. Giarlotta, D. Carpentiere, and I have shown that 
this description enables much shorter and intuitive proofs of most of 
the principal theoretical results about semiorders.

In this talk, we will explain semiorders, review their history, and 
sketch the ideas we developed in the description of all semiorders.

About the Speaker: Prof. Stephen Watson is a Full Professor and Chair of 
the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Throughout his academic 
career, he has conducted research in a wide range of fields, including 
topology, analysis, probability, logic, combinatorics, category theory, 
algebra, machine-proving, information theory, utility theory, and choice 
functions. Since 2015, Prof. Watson has focused his research on 
mathematical economics, particularly on preferences and choice 
functions. His work contributes to both pure and applied mathematics, 
offering in-depth analyses that bridge different mathematical 
disciplines. His publications and academic contributions can be accessed

Başlık: Yarı-Sıralamaların Bir Tanımı ve Sonuçları

Özet: 1914 yılında Norbert Wiener, yarı-sıralama (semiorder) kavramını 
tanıttı. 1956 yılında Duncan Luce, yarı-sıralamaları ekonomi alanına 
taşıyarak ilgisizliğin geçişken olmadığı durumlarda tercihleri incelemek 
için kullandı. Sonraki 70 yıl içinde yarı-sıralamalar, risklerin veya 
hataların mevcut olduğu durumlarda ekonomik seçimleri ve kararları 
modellemek için temel bir kavram haline geldi. 1958 yılında Dana Scott 
ve Patrick Suppes, bir yarı-sıralamanın algı eşiği ile ifade edilmesi 
için yeterli koşulları belirledi. Sonraki yıllarda çeşitli 
araştırmacılar, bu tanımlama için gerekli koşulları ortaya koydu. 2016 
yılında A. Giarlotta ile birlikte, tüm yarı-sıralamaları bir tür 
kaydırılmış leksikografik sıralama kullanarak tanımlayan bir yaklaşım 
sunduk. Bu yöntem, algı eşiği kavramını genişletmektedir. 2025 yılında 
A. Giarlotta, D. Carpentiere ve ben, bu tanımlamanın yarı-sıralamalar 
hakkındaki temel teorik sonuçların çoğu için çok daha kısa ve sezgisel 
ispatlar sağladığını gösterdik.

Bu konuşmada yarı-sıralamaları açıklayacak, tarihçelerini gözden 
geçirecek ve tüm yarı-sıralamaların tanımlanmasına yönelik 
geliştirdiğimiz fikirleri özetleyeceğiz.

Konuşmacı Hakkında: Prof. Stephen Watson, York Üniversitesi (Kanada) 
Matematik ve İstatistik Bölümü'nde tam zamanlı profesördür. 
Araştırmaları, topoloji, analiz, olasılık, mantık, kombinatorik, 
kategori teorisi, cebir, makine ispatı, bilgi teorisi, fayda teorisi ve 
seçim fonksiyonları gibi geniş bir yelpazeyi kapsamaktadır. 2015 
yılından itibaren matematiksel ekonomi alanında, özellikle tercihler ve 
seçim fonksiyonları üzerine çalışmaktadır. Yayınlarına ve akademik
