  Speaker:  Mehmetcik Pamuk

  Title: An Introduction to Big Mapping Class Groups

  Abstract: The classical mapping class group, $Mod(S)$, is the group  of 
symmetries of a compact, finite-type surface $S$. It is a  foundational, 
finitely generated, discrete group that is central to  low-dimensional 
topology and geometry. In this talk, we explore what  happens when the 
surface is allowed to be of infinite type, giving  rise to the big 
mapping class group, $Mod(\Sigma)$.
