classes of self diffeomorphisms of the surface. This group plays a
central role in low dimensional topology. Therefore, its algebraic
properties are of interest. In this talk, I will describe some known
algebraic properties. Some of these properties are derived from its
action on geometric objects, which include various simplicial complexes
formed from arcs and/or curves on the surface.
