<p dir="ltr" style="margin:10px 0;padding:0;color:#666666;font-family:Arial,'Helvetica Neue',Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:14px;line-height:200%;text-align:left">Kırcaali, Bulgaristan doğumlu olan Cemal Koç 1959’da Tokat İlköğretmen Okulunu bitirip Ankara Yüksek Öğretmen okuluna başladı. Bu sırada bir yandan Ankara Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi Matematik Astronomi bölümünü takip etmeye başladı. 1963’te üniversiteyi bitirip ilk önce öğretmen olarak çalıştı, ancak memnun kalmayıp Ege Üniversitesi Matematik Bölümünde asistan olarak çalışma hayatına devam etti. Muzaffer Kula’nın danışmanlığında diferansiyel geometri alanında yaptığı doktorasını 1969’da tamamladı. Matematik alanındaki çalışmalarının yönü o yıllarda Ege Üniversitesinde doçent olan Masatoshi İkeda’nın etkisiyle cebire döndü. İki matematikçi Cahit Arf’ın davetiyle ODTÜ Matematik bölümüne geçtiler ve 1970’te Cemal Koç ODTÜ’de asistan profesör olarak çalışmaya başladı. Ertesi yıl TÜBİTAK NATO araştırma bursu ile Londra Üniversitesine giden matematikçi döndüğünde iki yıl askerlik görevini yaptı. 1978’de doçentliğini, 1994’te ise profesörlüğünü aldı. Ancak siyasi çalkantılarla dolu 1980’lerden Cemal Koç da etkilenmişti.<br>

12 Eylül darbesinden sonra, 1983 yılındaki sıkıyönetimin yasada yaptığı bir değişiklikle işten çıkarılan akademisyenlerden birisi de Cemal Koç’tu (bkz. <a href="https://matematiginpesinde.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11f21fb69fcff90683bf6f279&id=daa4090ebc&e=52052349e2" style="color:#111111;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline" target="_blank">1402’likler</a>). Altı yıl üniversiteden uzak kalan matematikçi 1989’da aynı görevine geri döndü. 1992-1994 yılları arasında Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesinde çalışıp ODTÜ’ye döndü. 1999 yılında ODTÜ’den emekli oldu ve İstanbul’a taşınarak Doğuş Üniversitesinde çalışmaya başladı. Bu bölümün kurucularındandı. Burada düzenli olarak cebir seminerleri düzenlemeye başladı. Bir yandan Doğuş Üniversitesi Liseler Arası Matematik Yarışmasını başlatıp devam ettirdi. <br>

Matematiksel çalışmaları değişmeli halkalar ve Clifford cebirleri üzerineydi. İsmail Ş. Matematik Dünyası dergisinin ilk editörü olan Cemal Koç, aynı zamanda ülkemizdeki az sayıdaki uluslararası matematik konferanslarından olan Antalya Cebir Günlerinin de kurucularından. 1985 yılında Türkiye Matematik Vakfının kurucuları arasında yer alan matematikçinin yıllarca üniversitelerde okutulan <em>Basic Linear Algebra</em> isimli bir kitabı var(İsmail Ş. Güloğlu ve yakın geçmişte kaybettiğimiz Mehpare Bilhan ile birlikte). Kitabın Türkçesi Songül Esin’in katkılarıyla ODTÜ Matematik Vakfı tarafından 2014’te basıldı. Cemal hocamız bunlara ek olarak <em>Topics in Linear Algebra</em> ve <em>Soyut Cebir</em> (Mehpare Bilhan ile birlikte) kitaplarının da yazarı.<br>

Hayatının son iki yılında kanser tedavisi gören, bu tedaviler sırasında cebir seminerlerini hiç aksatmadan devam ettiren Cemal Koç Şubat 2010’da üniversitedeki görevini bıraktıktan iki ay sonra, 1 Nisan 2010’da vefat etti. Matematik Dünyası dergisinin 2010 yılı ilk sayısı Cemal Koç’a adanmıştır ve ülkemizde halen <a href="https://matematiginpesinde.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11f21fb69fcff90683bf6f279&id=a8776c9f79&e=52052349e2" style="color:#111111;font-weight:normal;text-decoration:underline" target="_blank">Cemal Koç Cebir Günleri</a> düzenlenmektedir.</p>
