A promenade in the world of CHAOS and SOLITONS followed by an essay in
Quantum Mechanics


*Özet: *

“IT IS BY LOGIC THAT WE PROVE, BUT BY INTUITION THAT WE DISCOVER” Henri
Poincaré (1854-1912). One such inspiration earned Poincaré a prize from the
King of Sweden in 1887. His solution was wrong. But tis was the origin of
the field of CHAOS, “things disordered”.

 An observation, proved to be wrong also, is at the beginning of SOLITONS,
“things most organized”. John Scott Russel, in 1844 wrote: “ … a large
solitary elevation  … without change of form or diminution of speed…”. KdV
came in 1895, the first PDE with Solitons.

 Quantum mechanics is most commonly described by the Schrödinger equation,
a linear PDE that cannot include dissipation nor chaos and solitons. The
Bohm or Quantum Fluid Dynamics (QFD) representation, a set of nonlinear
PDE’s, is equivalent to Schrödinger’s.

 The lecture will be a NON-TECHNICAL introduction to Chaos and Solitons,
probably the two most significant progress in differential equations in the
20th century. An essay with a dissipative term, in the manner of Navier –
Stokes equation for classical fluids is introduced to the QFD
representation. The equation has ingredients that lead to dissipation and
vorticity; and perhaps would eventually include chaos and solitons as
outcome.
